Thomas L. Shoaf, M.D.
Dr. Shoaf is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist specializing in Attention Deficit Disorders, Mood
Disorders (depressive illnesses, bipolar disorder, and grief/bereavement), Anxiety Disorders (anxiety, panic
disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder), Neurodevelopmental Disorders (autism
spectrum disorders, Asperger’s disorder), Sleep Disorders, and Forensics (legal, custody, and court related
matters). In his practice, he exercises the use of the minimal effective psychopharmacological dosing while
emphasizing the importance of whole health in a goal-oriented approach.
Dr. Shoaf has extensive experience in psychopharmacology having been the Principal Investigator of more than
thirty clinical trials while serving on faculty, practicing, and teaching as Assistant Professor at the University
of Chicago and previously at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He also served as Senior Medical
Director of Clinical Research and Development in the pharmaceutical industry, where he oversaw the development of
five psychiatry and neurology medications now approved by the FDA and European regulatory agencies for attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, and narcolepsy.
Dr. Shoaf received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his medical degree from the University of
Kansas School of Medicine, and his MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He
completed residency training in General Psychiatry and fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UT
Southwestern at Dallas. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Shoaf has authored numerous publications including the book Why Is My Child’s ADHD Not Better Yet? which was
published by McGraw Hill in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.
Dr. Shoaf is the proud father of his two young children Odie and Lowell whom he cherishes parenting.
